GSK Pakistan invested Rs 74million and pioneering the new packaging technology.

For a very long time, GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) Pakistan's production department was working day and night to find out a substitute packaging solution for there best selling medicine in antibiotics category, "Augmentin". Before this innovation in the packaging of Augmentin, it was available in a glass bottle which was costing the company millions of rupees every year.

The motive behind developing the new technology was to reduce the cost of doing business because of inflation causing increase in raw material prices and high regulations imposed by DRAP (Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan) upon increasing the prices of life-saving drug, GSK was finding it hard to keep up the quality and profitability at the same time. Considering the decrease in quality to have margins was not an option for GSK.

For many years, GSK wanted to introduce Augmentin in blister packaging. However, due to moisture absorbing nature of Augmentin, the blister packaging was not stable because it use to swell and you cannot keep the medicine for a longer period of time. This was the reason, GSK was using a glass bottle and silica gel to absorb moisture.

But by investing Rs 74 million approx, GSK made a new paper called "dessiflex" which already has a natural silica gel in it to absorbs moisture and keep the medicine safe, helped GSK Pakistan to be the first company, not just in Pakistan but in whole GSK global family to introduce this technology said CEO GSK Pakistan, Muhammad Azizul Haq to introduce Augmentin in blister packaging.

Dessiflex technology uses a layer of micro-desiccant particles to provide enhanced protection for moisture sensitive tablets, like Augmentin. For patients, in addition to ensuring uncompromised quality, dessiflex blister packaging will also provide easier dose tracking, more safety, and greater convenience as compared to bottles.

And it's just the first step. GSK recently introduced its 4 products Calpol suspension, Calpol 6 plus suspension, Piriton and Maxolon in Plastic PET bottles and this is also due to not compromising on quality but finding a high quality cheap but better alternative to serving the people of Pakistan but not losing the quality promised by the company.
